I’ve made a lovely new discovery: a brand new Pilates studio in York city centre where I arrive feeling frazzled and leave feeling fantastic. York Pilates People is a big, bright new studio on the top floor of a beautiful building on Clifford Street run by Lou, a very friendly and approachable instructor with a good sense of humour (vital when you’re prone to falling off an exercise ball).
With twenty-two classes from Monday to Friday – including pregnancy and post-natal sessions (the latter from the new year) – there are lots of options, whether you’ve never graced a Pilates mat or you’re a bit of a pro. As someone who’s in-between, I’ve tried and enjoyed one of Lou’s mixed ability classes: a focused 45-minute lunchtime session that had me doing all sorts of moves and finished with me feeling a lot better than if I’d just sat at my desk and eaten a sandwich.
Speaking of food, the studio is above Daughter Cafe, a new family-run cafe that gets the Little Vikings seal of approval. It serves great brunch food, good coffee and welcomes families with open arms (think toy boxes, kids’ books, high chairs and baby-changing). Anyone attending Lou’s post-natal classes – where babies are welcome to tag along for the ride – should take advantage of the location and treat themselves to lunch at the cafe or even just one of their delicious cakes. Buggies can be left downstairs and a warm family-friendly welcome is guaranteed. Keep the details up your sleeve for the new year when you’ve got post-Christmas exhaustion or try a taster session this month and get a head-start (details below). You might even get to December 25th without feeling like a Christmas pudding!
York Pilates People, 2nd Floor, 10 Clifford St, York YO1 9RD. Post-natal Pilates begins on 11th January and will be at 12 pm on Fridays. There are flexible membership options available and taster classes are available until the end of the month.
