Looking for family-friendly things to do in York this summer? York Castle Museum has a packed programme of summer events and activities, with the whole museum transformed to celebrate two unforgettable eras: the elegant Victorian galas of the 1860s and the colourful, flower-power spirit of the 1960s. From 22 June to 6 September, families can enjoy immersive displays, hands-on activities and plenty of opportunities to step back in time, making it one of the best days out in York for kids this summer.
What’s on this summer at York Castle Museum

Victorian vibes on Kirkgate
The museum’s famous Kirkgate (the oldest recreated Victorian street in Britain) gets a full summer makeover, complete with seasonal flowers, bunting, and an updated day-to-night soundscape and lighting display created with Field Studios. The shops have new summer-themed items to discover, and you can chat to the shopkeepers and residents about life on a Victorian street.
The Last Stop Before Kirkgate – extended due to popular demand!

The ‘Last Stop Before Kirkgate’ immersive experience (created by Novo Theatre) has been updated for the gala theme too. Kids can hear from a boy excited about his hot air balloon ride, a violinist performing at the gala and a judge inspecting the flower displays before stepping into the street itself. Look out for the Blue Room installation just off Kirkgate, where paper-cut hot air balloons made by Yorkshire artist Pippa Dyrlaga will hang overhead, inspired by the real balloon rides at York’s Victorian galas.
Daily activities for all ages

Make your own balloon
From Saturday 25 July, families can join free drop-in workshops on Saturdays throughout August to make their own paper hot air balloons, adding to the display. These are included in general admission.
Sixties summer
Alongside the Victorian programme, the museum brings back the nostalgia of 1960s summers, with flower power decor, toys, fashion, iconic household objects, and the music of the decade playing throughout.
Outdoor games and activities
The Exercise Yard will be open with outdoor games and activities for all ages throughout the summer holidays from mid-July. It’s a great way to burn off some energy between the galleries.
Plan your visit

The Castle Museum’s summer programme opens from mid-June, so you can visit during the week before the school holidays start and enjoy a quieter experience. Other exhibitions, including Secrets of Dress (fashion history) and York Castle Prison, are open every day too.
