Description

For children who want to channel their inner Indiana Jones, Dig is just the place. Run by York Archaeological Trust (the experts in all things Viking who also run the JORVIK Viking Centre), this is a fun, hands-on archaeological experience aimed specifically at children. Visits are led by a guide (a real archaeologist, no less) so this is a real learning experience: children can do their own excavation and see what treasures they can find. There’s also an excellent Little Diggers area, aimed at the under fives, which brings archaeology to life. Our children absolutely love DIG and often ask to go back – it’s great for young and older children alike. Friendly staff, thoughtful displays and exciting exhibits make this a great destination.

Good to know – If you’re local and have a 2 to 5 year old, look into the Little Diggers groups at certain times of year like Christmas, Easter, summer and during the JORVIK Viking Festival. An enthusiastic guide leads a small group of little diggers, with a different theme every time. They also do fantastic birthday parties - take a look at the Birthday Parties section of this website for more details.
