Families often ask…
We can see it outside for free. Is it really worth going in?
The exterior is stunning, but the interior is next level and unlike anything you’ll experience from the outside. The space, the stories and the history – not to mention the special children’s activities – means York Minster is one of our top places to visit in York with kids.
Is York Minster suitable for toddlers?
Yes, but manage your expectations! Toddlers won’t be interested in the history, but they will respond to the scale of the space, the colours of the windows and the contents of the Explorer backpacks. Keep it short, use the buggy and try one of the trails. Tickets are valid for 12 months, so there’s no pressure to do everything in one go. Come back when they’re ready for more.
What age is the Minster tower climb suitable for?
If you’re visiting York Minster with kids, you might want to consider adding tickets for the Tower Challenge to your experience. The Minster recommends children are at least 8 years old for the Tower climb, and they need to be able to manage 275 narrow, steep spiral steps unaided. There’s no lift and no turning back once you start! If in doubt, wait until they’re older and more confident. Those who get to the top will be rewarded with cracking views and a great sense of achievement.
Do we need to book York Minster in advance?
It’s not always essential, but booking online in advance is definitely worth doing during the school holidays and warmer months. Tower tickets in particular can sell out on busy days, so book those separately if the climb is on your list. If you’re a York resident, you’re lucky enough to be able to enjoy free admission to the Minster all year. Residents don’t need to pre-book, but do need to take proof of address.
Is there anywhere to eat near York Minster?
The Minster doesn’t have its own cafe, but as it’s in the city centre, it’s surrounded by excellent places to eat. High and Low Petergate, Gillygate and Bootham are just a short walk away and have plenty of family-friendly restaurants and cafés. Take a look at some fun places to eat in York with kids.
Top tips for visiting with kids

1
Give them a mission
Pick up one of the children’s trails at the entrance to make the visit feel like an adventure.
2
Go early
The Minster is a lovely place to visit at any time of day, but it tends to be quieter early on, so arrive in the morning if you can for the best experience.
3
Do the Undercroft
This underground museum is included in your ticket and is genuinely fascinating. There are also lots of hands-on activities for children, too.
4
Check for special events
York Minster runs family-friendly events throughout the year, especially during school holidays. Check what’s on before you visit.
5
Save the Tower for the right age
The Tower Challenge is 275 steep spiral steps with no lift and some tight sections, so it’s not for everyone. Save it until your kids are really ready.

Book tickets in advance
By booking online, you’ll skip the queue. This is especially worth doing in school holidays when the Minster gets busy.
7
Hear the bells if you can
The Minster bells ring regularly and hearing them is something really special. Check the bell-ringing schedule on the website and try to time your visit around it.
8
Plan a festive visit
Christmas is our favourite time to visit the Minster. The Christmas Tree Festival is wonderful, and there are special family services too.
