Rowntree Park

0

Rowntree Park Little VikingsHolder of a Green Flag Award (a scheme that recognises the best green spaces in the country), Rowntree Park is arguably York’s best. The park was a gift to the city by Rowntree & Co. in 1921 and is still a destination for locals and visitors alike. It’s no wonder; it’s a beautiful place with lots going on. There are two well-equipped and maintained play areas that cater for all ages, a small lake with ducks and geese, tennis courts available for hire at a small fee, a skate park, a basketball court and gardens.

We say This ever-popular park is a fantastic space for all the family. If the kids get bored of the play areas, they can enjoy hiding in a huge Roman helmet, sitting on a totem pole or feeling superior astride the huge bronze horse statue (if you can help them onto it!). The Rowntree Park Reading Café is one of the best places for coffee in York: fantastic hot drinks, cakes and light meals served by cheerful staff in a welcoming environment. It’s also a branch of the York libraries, so members can borrow books (and non-members can browse).

Good to know Don’t wear your best shoes! Lots of geese make for mucky grass. Younger children will enjoy browsing the selection of children’s books at the café while they have a snack. There are often lots of activities going on at the park, like the annual Festival of Cycling. Check out the City of York Council website and the News from the Park website for further details.
