If you’re looking for a peaceful, family-friendly escape just outside York city centre, the pretty gardens at Goddards are just the place. Reopening on 1st March 2025, Goddards is a hidden gem that’s much loved by local families. Tucked away next to York Racecourse, this hidden National Trust place is a lovely spot to let kids roam free while the adults enjoy a stroll.
A Secret Garden with a Sweet History
Just a mile and a half from the heart of York, Goddards was once home to the famous Terry family, the masterminds behind the much-loved Chocolate Orange. Over the years, they created a beautiful garden filled with hidden corners, open green spaces and lots to see. Today, while the house itself is used as an office by the National Trust’s Yorkshire teams, the gardens remain open for families to enjoy during the spring and summer months.
An Outdoor Adventure for All Ages
With five acres of beautifully designed gardens, there’s plenty to keep kids entertained. The gardens, originally created in the 1920s, are divided into different ‘rooms’, each with its own unique feel. Little ones can have fun spotting signs of spring, from bright yellow daffodils to delicate blossoms, while older children will love exploring the rock gardens and secret paths. The takeaway café kiosk is perfect for a quick pit stop, so why not enjoy a hot drink and cake on the terrace?
