Good to know – Unless you’re hardy souls, Castle Howard is better suited to good weather days if you’re planning to stay outside. Historic Houses Association members get in free. If you don’t want to visit the house, just pay to get into the gardens. There’s a little land train that will take you down the hill to the playground (or back up afterwards) if you’re running out of steam.

|Food & Drink:||Eat at the Courtyard Cafe (breakfasts, lunches and snacks, open from 10am) or grab a takeaway coffee, sandwich or cake from the Coffee Shop. During school holidays, and during weekends when the house is closed, the Boathouse Cafe – next to the adventure playground – is open. It overlooks the Great Lake and serves a family-friendly menu. Failing that, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes for places to picnic.|
