Travel Around the World with York Theatre Royal

York Theatre Royal families

Are you planning to travel the world with your family this year? After a long time without international travel, lots of us have started to think about spreading our wings again and heading overseas. It’s been so long since we’ve been away that our kids are desperate to discover whether there’s life outside Yorkshire! They’ve got lots of ideas about where they’d like to go, from Greece to Spain, Italy and France. Thanks to their love of American family sitcoms, though, the United States is at the top of the list! While we might be dreaming of jetting off to the US of A to wave hello to the Statue of Liberty, climb the Empire State Building and – let’s be honest – tuck into burgers as big as our heads, the reality is that our summer will be more Old York than New York.

Ah well, maybe next year. In fact, we’re already planning a trip to the States, and boy does it need some planning. It makes a camping trip in the Yorkshire Dales look like a doddle in comparison. We’ve found an easy way to get our visas (it turns out we do need one) and now we just need to remember to renew the kids’ passports, Book flights, research hotels, work out any vaccination requirements, check the covid situation, buy a guidebook, work out what to take…We’ll definitely need a holiday by the time we’ve got to the end of the to-do list! Let us know if you’ve got any tips for a trip to the Big Apple.

Anyway, if it all goes wrong, at least we’ve got something else to do together that sounds like fun: we can all travel the world with York Theatre Royal by heading along to their latest show, Around the World in 80 Days. After the success of the Travelling Pantomime, York’s oldest theatre will be once again taking to the road and bringing the globe to various venues around York, from parks to school fields and even to the theatre itself (one of our favourite places for a night out and to catch some excellent children’s shows).

Join York Theatre Royal’s raggle-taggle band of travelling circus performers as they embark on their most daring feat yet: to perform the story of Phileas Fogg and his faithful companion Passepartout as they set off on their race around the world. But will the performers be able to recreate every country, character and mode of transport in the book? Will they all agree on what story should be told? Will this madcap adventure reach its final destination in one piece? If it does, will they all still be friends? And just who is Nellie Bly…?

This irresistible around-the-world romp based on the classic tale will be packed to bursting with fun and frivolity. It’s the perfect holiday substitute and you can catch it outside or at the theatre. Umbrella, suncream, wellies, raincoats, bikinis and blankets are all optional depending on the state of the unpredictable British summer weather! The show is suitable for children aged 7+ and no passport required! As always, pre-booking is strongly recommended as many of York Theatre Royal’s shows sell out. Early booking also guarantees the best price.

This new and exciting adaptation of Around the World in 80 Days will be on tour soon, with dates to be announced shortly, Be sure to keep an eye on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram account for all the details, and why not sign up to our weekly newsletter too? It’s the best way to know what’s going on in and around York for kids throughout the year.
