There’s something really special about seeing a familiar place in a completely new light, and that’s exactly what Echoes of Yorkshire: The Museum Illuminated does at York Museum Gardens this October half term. Running from 24th October to 2nd November 2025, this brand-new light and sound show by the internationally acclaimed team Luxmuralis transforms one of York’s most beautiful landmarks into an after-dark adventure through time.
We went along to the preview and it was even more spectacular and colourful than we’d anticipated. We wandered through the paths and gardens, watching the projections dancing across the ruins and spotting objects from The Yorkshire Museum and York Art Gallery. It’s a really clever and engaging way to tell stories of Yorkshire’s past – from dinosaurs and Romans to Vikings and Victorians – and we all loved it. Each section had its own atmosphere, with stunning light effects and an impressive soundtrack that made it even more immersive.

The whole experience takes around an hour, and it’s easy to explore at your own pace. It’s a lovely sensory experience for children and adults alike, and our kids especially loved spotting hidden details in the displays. They were delighted that Thor’s is now open, too, so we could warm up with a hot chocolate afterwards. The excitement of heading out in the dark never fades and always feels special, but we were still home well in time for bedtime and Traitors!
With under 5s going free, it’s a great value evening out for families looking to do something memorable this half term, without a pumpkin in sight! Whether you’re a local or just visiting York, Echoes of Yorkshire is gorgeous and definitely has our seal of approval.
