Are you a plane fan in the house? Why not plan a trip to the Yorkshire Air Museum this summer? Head out to Elvington, just a short drive or bus ride from York, and discover incredible aircraft, fascinating stories and even an aeroplane-themed playground!
Set on the site of an original RAF bomber base, the Yorkshire Air Museum is the largest independent aviation museum in the UK, and it’s home to more than 60 aircraft and vehicles. Clamber aboard the iconic Dakota transport plane, get up close to Cold War jets and stand beneath the mighty Victor tanker, recently repainted in stunning camouflage. And don’t miss the museum’s pride and joy: the only example of a WWII Halifax heavy bomber in Europe.
With historic hangars, original wartime buildings and a vintage on-site cinema showing old footage, stepping through the gates feels like travelling back in time. Younger visitors can also blow off steam in the aviation-themed playground, tuck into something tasty at Café 77 (in the original Naafi building, no less) or enjoy a picnic in the spacious grounds. We’ve been loads of times and it’s a brilliant day out.
