If you’re looking for a unique family experience in York this October half term, Echoes of Yorkshire: The Museum Illuminated is one to add to your list. For ten nights only, York Museum Gardens will be transformed by the internationally renowned creative team Luxmuralis into a breathtaking open-air light and sound installation, bringing history to life in the most magical way.

Running from Friday 24th October to Sunday 2nd November 2025 (6pm to 8.20pm), this after-dark spectacle invites families to explore the gardens and the story of the Yorkshire Museum through immersive projections, music and colour. Kids will love wandering through the glowing gardens while discovering moments from Yorkshire’s fascinating past, from dinosaurs to Romans, Vikings to Victorians, through dazzling light displays.

It’s not just beautiful to look at, either: the whole experience will take about an hour to enjoy at your own pace, with timed entry every 20 minutes to help avoid crowds. There’ll also be refreshments available to buy, making it a great evening out for all ages.
With under 5s going free, it’s a brilliant way to enjoy York’s rich history in a brand-new light (literally). Whether you’re local or visiting, this brand new show promises to be a lovely family experience for half term.
