
This May half term, keep the whole family entertained with activities designed to help young explorers discover York’s medieval Minster. Don’t forget, kids go free! Up to four children aged 17 and under can visit the Minster for free with a paying adult.
The Carnival of the Animals: A family-sized exploration of the organ – Wednesday 28th May 2025, 7pm

Hear the animal kingdom brought to life inside York Minster as young listeners are guided through Camille Saint-Saëns’ The Carnival of the Animals performed on the cathedral’s Grand Organ. It’s the perfect introduction to classical music. Tickets are priced from £7, and are available now.
Meet the Romans – Thursday 29th to Saturday 31st May, 10am – 3pm

Join costumed interpreters from Days Gone By to learn more about York Minster’s Roman past. Chat to a Roman soldier, see objects from daily life and try your hand at some Roman-style crafts before taking home your very own hand-stamped IX Legion dog tag. Included with general admission.
Explore the Minster

Follow a trail map and borrow a Little Explorer Backpack filled with gadgets to help your young adventurer discover the medieval Minster (free!). Next up, step back in time and follow Roman soldiers’ footsteps at York Minster’s Undercroft Museum, our own kids’ favourite part of the cathedral. This state-of-the-art attraction showcases over 2,000 years of history, offering a fascinating glimpse into York’s past. From Roman remains to medieval artefacts, there’s plenty to discover and it’s all included with your admission ticket.
Enjoy York Minster’s Green Spaces

Don’t dash off after your visit: make sure you explore one (or more) of York Minster’s lovely green spaces. Dean’s Park, Minster Gardens and College Green are perfect for a picnic or just letting your children run free. If you fancy meeting Paddington (and who wouldn’t?), you’ll find him at Dean’s Park.
