Mulled wine wafting on the breeze, lights twinkling on the trees; you know Christmas has really begun in York when York Christmas Market (also known as St Nicholas Fair) opens. Now in its 31st year, York’s Christmas market is one of the most popular in the UK, bringing visitors from across the country to enjoy delicious things to eat and drink, and an opportunity to pick up unique gifts that you wouldn’t find on the high street. In 2022, it was even voted 5th best Christmas market in the world and second best in the UK!
When is York Christmas Market on in 2023?
This year, York’s Christmas market opens on Thursday 16th November and runs until 22nd December 2023. York’s Christmas lights will also be on, and the colourful Tree of Light will return to the Eye of York too. So make space in your family’s festive diary for a Christmas day out to Santa’s favourite city (probably). Find more info on the Visit York website.
Getting to York Christmas market
York gets very busy around Christmas, so we would always recommend taking public transport if you can. Parking is expensive and spaces are limited (and you can’t enjoy a mulled wine if you’re driving!). Christmas Market is a very easy ten-minute walk from York station, and is very easy to reach by bus. We’d recommend York Park and Ride as a good value way to get into the city; it’s fast, reliable and good value.
