There’s a new reason to explore York with kids this summer, and it’s wild, wonderful, and completely free: the Tommy Treebark Trail! Families living in or visiting York are invited to take part in this fun city centre trail, which promises to be fun for all ages.

Running from 25th April to 14th September 2025, this creative initiative from The York BID has transformed the city into a giant outdoor gallery, with 50 decorated benches across 10 areas of York city centre brought to life by a menagerie of wild Yorkshire animals. Each bench features a unique design, perfect for little nature lovers to spot as they explore the cobbled streets.

Designed for children aged 3 to 12, the trail invites families to pick up a free trail leaflet from the Visit York Information Centre on Parliament Street, then head off on a mission to help Tommy Treebark find all his wild friends. Complete the trail and return your leaflet to claim a FREE prize, from a snuggly cuddly toy to a Tommy Treebark badge or a handy minibeast magnifier for more outdoor exploring!

This new trail is a perfect way to experience York with kids, discovering tucked-away corners and making the most of the city’s summer seating areas (because if there’s one thing we know, it’s that parents need a good sit down during a family day out). Whether you’re visiting during the holidays or you’re lucky enough to live here, it’s a must-do in York this spring and summer.
