Review – Slava’s Snow Show at the Grand Opera House York

We had no idea what to expect from Slava’s Snow Show at the Grand Opera House, and now we’ve seen it, we’re still not entirely sure! It’s an experience unlike anything we’ve ever had in the theatre, and almost impossible to sum up. Imagine tumbling into a strange, clown-filled fever dream after an overenthusiastic encounter with the Christmas cheeseboard: surprising, surreal and full of theatrical magic.

What it lacks in dialogue or a traditional plot, it more than makes up for with impressive physical theatre, dramatic staging and one of the most incredible finales you’re ever likely to see (kudos to the Grand Opera House staff who have to clear it up afterwards!).

Although the age recommendation is 8+, there were younger children in the audience too. Hopefully they weren’t expecting circus-style clowning: this is subtler, more atmospheric and more adult in tone than the slapstick we’re used to. It’s also worth mentioning that the opening scene involves Slava contemplating putting a noose around his neck – a surprising and slightly unsettling way to begin a show that ultimately ends so joyfully. Thankfully, it lifts from that point onwards and becomes a powerful, poignant and often very funny piece that might just inspire the next generation of performers. The finale, which feels like a full-blown party that the entire audience is invited to, is the moment you’ll remember and talk about long after.

Slava’s Snow Show is a witty, immersive and utterly unique piece of theatre, right here on our doorstep. And honestly, who wouldn’t want to party with clowns? What a way to kick off the festive season!

Slava’s Snow Show runs at the Grand Opera House, York until Sunday 23rd November 2025
