This variation on cheese straws are a firm family favourite, and they're so easy to make. If we've got people coming over, we often make a couple of batches and they always disappear instantly. For the adults, we sometimes add a few mild spices, like cumin or nigella seeds.
- 1 x sheet of ready-rolled puff pastry
- 75g cheddar, grated
- 1 medium free-range egg, beaten
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C fan/gas 7 and line a baking tray with baking paper/a silicone sheet
2. Place the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface and use a rolling pin to flatten it out a bit.
3. Scatter the grated cheese over one half of the pastry rectangle. Fold the other half of the pastry over the cheese, pressing down the edges to seal. Gently roll the folded pastry to flatten it slightly, then cut it into 1cm-wide strips.
4. Twist each strip several times, then shape them into bangles by pressing the ends together. Place the bangles onto the lined baking tray.
5. Brush each bangle with the beaten egg wash, and sprinkle with extra cheese if you like.
6. Transfer to the preheated oven and bake for around 15 minutes, or until crisp and golden. Cool on the tray, then transfer to a wire rack.
