
The National Railway Museum is turning 50, and everyone’s invited to the party! Families can enjoy a packed programme of free activities across the birthday weekend, with something for train lovers of all ages. Highlights include:
- – Station Hall reopens – explore the newly refurbished hall, filled with historic rail treasures.
- – Behind-the-scenes tours – peek inside the Conservation Studio, Archive Stores and Art Store (tours are ticketed and limited).
- – Cab access – climb aboard famous locomotives including Mallard, Intercity 125, Boxhill and Eurostar.
- – Curator talks & object picks – discover fascinating railway stories straight from the experts.
- – Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery – get hands-on with science and engineering (usually ticketed, but free this weekend. Pre-booking required).
- – Family fun – storytelling, face painting, stilt walkers and rides on the Miniature Railway.
Some activities (like the Flying Scotsman VR and Signalling School) are already sold out, so early booking is advised.
