There’s something magical about Raby Castle. It’s become a firm favourite for a family day out since we discovered it, and even more so since the opening of The Plotters’ Forest, their brilliant outdoor adventure play area. Set in a beautiful corner of County Durham, it’s a wonderful place to see the seasons change, and it’s perfect for a festive day out this Christmas too. As the holiday season draws near, Raby Castle undergoes a stunning transformation into a captivating winter wonderland, with an array of enchanting events and activities for all ages. From illuminated trails to festive markets and delicious afternoon teas, Raby Castle offers an immersive experience sure to ignite the holiday spirit. Here are some of the highlights.

The Plotters’ Forest Enchanted Trail – Visitors can immerse themselves in the enchantment of the Enchanted Christmas Trail, where twinkling lights and festive melodies create a beautiful winter landscape. As night falls, the trail comes alive, illuminated by a warm, inviting glow. Castle Terrace by Torchlight – Enjoy extended opening hours in November and bask in the illuminated beauty of the castle terrace against the starry skies. Witness the astonishing exterior and incredible architecture of the castle lit up against the crisp autumn night sky. Decorate the Tree Trail in the Deer Park – Embark on a magical adventure through the Deer Park to collect decorations for the Raby Christmas Tree. Raby Castle Christmas Market – Delight in the festive spirit at the Christmas Market featuring over 50 local market stalls. There’ll be delectable treats from pop-up kitchens, the chance to buy a Raby Christmas tree and live music from local performers. 2nd and 3rd December; Raby Castle – Christmas Market

High Force Waterfall – Father Christmas has lost his Presents Trail – Embark on a festive journey down to the Waterfall and through magical woodlands as you help Father Christmas recover his misplaced presents! Daily from 18th November; Raby Castle – High Force Winter Woodland

Festive Afternoon Tea at High Force – Indulge in a traditional afternoon tea with savoury sandwiches, scones, and sweet treats at High Force Hotel & Waterfall. Perfect for a Christmas catch-up with friends or family. 10th and 17th December at 4:30pm; Raby Castle – Christmas Afternoon Tea
