Whether it’s York’s ancient history or its recent connections with the world of Harry Potter, the city has become a popular destination for families in search of magic. The most magical spot in our already enchanting city is the Shambles, a quirky, cobbled medieval street that feels like stepping into a fairytale. Now there’s even more reason to visit: the opening of York’s newest experience, The Potions Academy. Read our review to find out what we made of it when we visited with two nine-year-old magic enthusiasts.
A Magical New Attraction in the Heart of York
The Potions Academy is the newest creation from the creative team behind The Potions Cauldron, the fun potions-themed shop on the Shambles, and The Hole in Wand, a wizard-themed mini-golf experience in Coppergate. Both of attractions have become must-visit places for families exploring York, and The Potions Academy is another welcome magical addition.
Getting there
The experience begins at The Potions Cauldron shop, where a friendly wizard greeted us and guided us through one of York’s famous snickelways, a narrow alleyway, to the nearby Potions Academy. The Academy is set in a charming old building, accessed by a narrow staircase. While this adds to the atmosphere, that does mean it isn’t accessible for wheelchairs or buggies. As we climbed the stairs and stepped into the dimly lit, beam-lined classroom of the Potions Academy, the magical atmosphere grew stronger. We took our seats alongside about ten other budding wizards, surrounded by smoking cauldrons and shifting portraits, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the potion master.
About the experience
We’re strong believers in not spoiling your experience with too much detail, but expect potion-mixing, storytelling, wand-waving, laughter, silliness and a bottle of potion for each wizard at the end. The girls really enjoyed it, getting stuck into the activities and giggling at the potion master, who was engaging and enchanting in equal measure. They were unfazed by the darkness, but it’s something to bear in mind if you have children who aren’t keen on the dark. The whole experience lasted around 25 minutes, which was just right. Afterwards we headed off to explore more of the spellbinding Shambles: a perfect afternoon worth hopping on our broomsticks for.
