Legendary steam locomotive Flying Scotsman is returning to York this Easter as part of the National Railway Museum’s 50th birthday celebrations. Free to enter, it’s on display from 5-23 April within the museum’s Flying Scotsman Story exhibition where you can step right up to the cab.
Add to the excitement for train fans (aged 8+), and book into the Flying Scotsman Virtual Reality Experience. You’ll be led through to a replica of Edinburgh Waverley station where you put on your headset for a fully immersive trip. Feel the wind in your hair and the heat of the firebox as you race to 100mph!

With free entry to the museum, you can explore a huge collection of trains, iconic rail vehicles, and a treasure trove of artefacts. Railway Firsts is a pop-up exhibition exploring well-known and unexpected ‘firsts’ that have shaped the railways and our lives. The littlest visitors will love the free play area for under 5s, and there are two cafés to refuel in.

Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery
Visit Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery, filled with hands-on family fun. Designed in partnership with rail industry experts, it’s packed with exhibits to unleash your child’s inner engineer. Step into the human wind tunnel, launch a rocket, plan routes to send balls through the ‘Great Machine’, design structures to withstand an earthquake and build big in Play Revolution. Staffed by wonderful science Explainers and with regular (explosive!) live science shows and demonstrations, Wonderlab is filled with fully interactive experiences and experiments. The newest demo Ultrasonic sees staff explain how sound is used by railway engineers to keep trains running safely. And what’s more, ticket prices for Wonderlab have been reduced for the season ahead, now starting at £9.90 so it’s the perfect time to visit.

After all that exploring, treat tired feet to a fun trip back into town. The Road Train links the museum with York Minster and is by far the most fun way to travel as a family through York. Simply get your tickets from the guard on board.
Opening Hours: The museum is open seven days a week, 10.00 – 17.00. Wonderlab is open 10.00 –16.30, with last admission at 15.30. Flying Scotsman VR has timed tickets throughout the day.
Tickets: Entry to the main museum is free. Charges apply for tickets to Wonderlab, Flying Scotsman VR and the Road Train. Visit railwaymuseum.org.uk/whats-on for ticket prices and booking information.
