Join us at the National Railway Museum for a summer of discovery, free family fun and a unique orchestral performance!
We’re celebrating 200 years of rail, as well as our 50th birthday. Step into the shoes of the inventors and engineers who shaped our past, and journey through the remarkable story of rail.

In 1825, ‘Locomotion No. 1’ made its pioneering journey along the Stockton & Darlington railway, marking the birth of rail travel.
– Help Digby the Dog prepare for Locomotion No.1’s grand arrival in a storytelling adventure in our Under-6’s Play Area.
– Learn about how a steam engine works with live talks and demonstrations of historic machinery, including our iconic turntable and winding engine.
– Get hands-on with real railway objects and explore the stories behind the tools, technologies and people that powered the railways forward.
Join us for ‘Steam and Symphony’, a free orchestral event in amongst the locomotives where you’ll feel the thunder of brass and the hiss of steam in one unforgettable performance on Sunday 27th July at 2pm. Simply book your free museum entry at railwaymuseum.org.uk

Unleash your inner engineer in Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery. Step into a wind tunnel, make your models fly and launch a rocket as you explore the wonder of the science and engineering of the railways. Wonderlab is packed with experiments, activities and regular live shows and demonstrations – sometimes explosive! This summer there are activities in the Wonderlab Maker Hub to explore energy and design, and storytelling sessions for young visitors to help build the railway from its early days to the high-speed present.
Tickets: Entry to the main museum is free. Charges apply for tickets to Wonderlab. Visit railwaymuseum.org.uk/whats-on for event and booking information.
Opening Hours: The museum is open seven days a week, 10.00 – 17.00. Wonderlab is open 10.00–16.30, with last admission at 15.30.
