What a night! Military Wives The Musical has arrived at York Theatre Royal for its world premiere, and it’s an total triumph. Written and directed by BAFTA/EMMY winner Debbie Isitt (of Nativity! fame), it’s inspired by the true story of the Military Wives choirs and based on the hit 2019 film.

We went without any particular expectations and came out celebrating one of the most joyful, emotional and genuinely funny pieces of theatre we’ve seen in a long time. The entire cast is brilliant, the music is powerful and the characters are so well-drawn that you can’t help but fall in love with them all, quirks and all. It’s a colourful celebration of courage, friendship and the untold stories of the women left at home.

No spoilers, but it also has one of the most unforgettable, spine-tingling theatre moments we’ve seen. No wonder we all leapt to our feet for a standing ovatio.
