After the expense of the summer holidays, Heritage Open Days 2024 couldn’t come at a better time. The event takes place from 6th to 15th September, but dates for free entry vary so do check online. As always, there are lots of lovely places to explore around York free of charge, and these are our top picks for kids this year.
Beningbrough
One of our favourite places near York for families, Beningbrough is a brilliant day out for kids. Explore the gardens, play in the wilderness play area, tuck into something tasty in the cafe and take a look around the Hall. Friday 6th September and Saturday 7th September, 10am to 5pm – no booking required
Nunnington Hall
Play in the gardens, have a game of pooh sticks from the bridge, spot a peacock and see what’s on in the hall. Friday 13th, Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th September – no booking required
North Yorkshire Moors Railway
There’s loads going on on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for Heritage Open Days, from tours to demos, games and talks. 6th to 15th September – no booking required – visit the website to find out more
Goddards
Hidden away on the edge of York racecourse, Goddards is the former home of the Terry family, part of York’s chocolate heritage. Explore the gardens and enjoy something from the takeaway on the terrace.
7th and 8th and 14th and 15th September – no booking required
Byland Abbey
English Heritage’s Byland Abbey is always free to enter, but there’ll be special talks and tours for Heritage Open Days, including ‘Byland Abbey in 90 Seconds’, a tour for a time-pressed generation (or impatient kids!). 6th to 15th September – no booking required – visit the website to find out more
