We might be bidding farewell to the summer holiday activities soon, but fear not: York’s the city that never rests, so it’s no surprise that there are lots of new things coming up in the autumn term for families to look forward to. As always, we’ll bring you details of the best so you don’t have to search for them (and if you haven’t signed up for our weekly newsletter yet, what are you waiting for?). First up, Riding Lights is hosting a lovely selection of family shows at the fantastic Friargate Theatre this autumn, with something for all ages.

What’s on at Friargate Theatre this autumn
Welcome to the World – This interactive show for 0-5 years will take you on a journey of Mother Earth’s Children – Tide, Ariel and Blaze – taking their first steps in the world. Despite their strong emotions, they discover magical mindful moments that support them to regulate their feelings and they soon realise that they can do anything. Filled to the brim with original songs and puppets made from natural and found objects, you’ll leave feeling connected, warm and full of love. Saturday 7th September, 11am and 1.30pm
Finding Chester – Edith Tiddles gets everything delivered to her door. She hasn’t stepped outside in 15 years! But when Chester, her cat, goes missing, Edith needs the help of her local delivery team, to get her cat back. Finding Chester takes us on a roller coaster journey as our two unlikely heroes follow the tracks of the missing moggy. Will Chester and Edith be reunited? Book now to find out. Atom and Luna – Atom and Luna are twins. They never break any rules and never, ever go into the woods. But they are no ordinary twins. Atom and Luna are special. Atom can talk to the birds. Luna can control the moon. And now the forest is calling to them…So begins Atom & Luna’s journey, an adventure that will change their lives forever. Age guidance 6+. Ghastly Stories for Gruesome Gremlins (told by Gav Cross) – Gav does not believe in ghosts. He’s never seen one, and doesn’t think there are monsters under his bed either. But he cannot get enough of the stories that give him the chills…
Stories have been stuffed full spooky creatures and supernatural beasts for as long as they have been shared. Expect things that glide, bite and chill you to your rattling bones. Old stories, new stories and true stories. There will be jumps and bumps along the way. Don’t worry too much though – you’ll probably be alright. Saturday 2nd November 2024, 2pm
How a Jellyfish Saved the World – Clyde the jellyfish is on a quest to find a forever friend in a home being polluted by the world above. When he mistakes a plastic bag named Bubbles for a total jellybabe, will he discover that life in plastic is not so fantastic? Jam Jar presents a tentacle-tapping puppetry musical for children and anemones. Sunday 3rd November 2024, 11am and 1.30pm
Súper Chefs – 6-year-old Manny is preparing a special dinner. He dreams of becoming a pro-chef like his mum, or a superhero like Mighty Mujer – or both! But Abuela, who’s in charge of the dessert, has other ideas about boys being in the kitchen. Join the family as they cook, sing, and dance in this interactive musical exploring family, food, and gender roles. Sunday 17th November 2024, 11am and 1.30pm
The Firework-Maker’s Daughter – Embark on a magical voyage across lakes and over mountains. See how Lila faces her biggest fears and fulfils her destiny to become a firework maker. This adventure for the whole family features talking elephants, silly kings and the timeless message that we all have the power to become the person we dream of being. Based on Philip Pullman’s novel, this intimate, accessible production is full of magic, puppets and audience participation. Saturday 30th November 2024, 11am and 1.30pm
A Christmas Cracker – Things are not going well for world-famous storyteller Ebeneezer Sneezer. He’s lost. There is snow in his wellies and his wise and faithful dog, Cracker, has some strange ideas about Christmas. Caught taking shelter in Mrs McGinty’s barn, she allows them to stay on condition that Ebeneezer warm up her Christmas with some of his seasonal stories. If they bring her enough glad tidings there’s a hot supper on the cards. If not they will be thrown back out into the storm. Saturday 21st December to Tuesday 24th December 2024
