Unteaching Creative Writing – A free workshop
How do we keep the creative spark alive, nurture a love of writing in children, or regain that love as adults?
In this session we’ll look at different techniques and games that unlock the block and get the words flowing. Teachers, facilitators and academics are welcome to join us at 11am to ‘unlearn’ some of those blocking habits before we bring in the kids at 11:30am to continue the unteaching!
Together, we’ll do activities that help everyone to get inspired and get writing. This will be a relaxed and joyful session that embraces all aspects of writing including: talking, playing, imagining, definitely not writing at all and, finally, actually getting some words down! As most writers will tell you, this is usually how the process goes…
About the speaker
The session will take place in The Guildhall Main Hall and is led by Sarah Williams. Sarah has been teaching creative writing for the past five years, with the privilege of doing so not in a traditional classroom, but in the wonderful setting of an independent bookshop. Through a playful blend of games, verbal storytelling, and even the occasional shadow puppet show, she helps both children and adults put their words on paper and discover, or rediscover, confidence in their own imaginations.
In 2023, Sarah founded Written in York, a project designed to bring together York’s diverse writing communities. She is also the Managing Director of York Creatives who continuously champions the belief that creativity in all its forms is essential, and that different artistic mediums can beautifully complement one another. With a mischievous streak and a passion for making creativity accessible to all, Sarah brings a sense of fun, encouragement, and community to her workshops and projects.
