This autumn, join the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in celebration! The 50th Anniversary Steam Gala takes place from Thursday, September 21 to Sunday, September 23 2023 and marks exactly half a century since the commencement of passenger services at the NYMR. This extraordinary four-day occasion will commemorate the past five decades with an assembly of visiting steam locomotives on the railway.

Enthusiasts and attendees are invited to witness up to 12 locomotives in active steam operation throughout the weekend. An array of guest locomotives and the railway’s own fleet engines will traverse the tracks, making stops at Pickering, Levisham, Newtondale Halt (available upon request), Goathland, Grosmont, and Whitby stations. The distinguished visiting locomotives include the renowned LNER A4 Pacific locomotive named ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ adorned in BR Blue livery. 

Throughout the gala, various stations along the railway line will host an array of engaging activities. The Annual Steam Gala Beer Festival will delight attendees at Goathland (Thursday: 11:30 AM – 6:00 PM, Fri-Sun: 11:30 AM – 11:00 PM, times subject to confirmation) and Levisham (Thursday & Sunday: 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM, Fri & Sat: 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM, times subject to confirmation), offering a diverse selection of real ales sourced from local breweries. Station Tea Rooms and Levisham Tea Hut will be open for those seeking refreshments.

The 50th Anniversary Steam Gala also marks the return of the Scarborough and District Railway Modellers, who will be stationed in the Learning Centre on Platform 2 at Pickering Station. Additionally, the Shed Shop at Grosmont, accessible via the foot tunnel, will feature an impressive range of model railway items.

At Pickering Station’s Platform 2, visitors can engage with the Dame Vera Lynn Fundraising Group, where updates on locomotive progress and avenues for supporting its overhaul will be shared.
