York Theatre Royal pantomime is coming back this Christmas! Oh no, it isn’t. Oh yes, it is!
For many York families – ours included – Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without a festive dose of York Theatre Royal silliness. But with the way this year has panned out, nobody would have been surprised if it had been shelved for the now.
But what’s that we hear in the distance? The sound of jingle bells and laughter? That’s right, the show will go on! But 2020 being 2020, there are some big changes afoot so that it can go ahead and reach as wide a York audience as possible.
What to expect from the York Theatre Royal panto 2020
Before you skip off to the York Theatre Royal website to book your favourite seats in the stalls, hold on! This year, the team at the theatre are taking the pantomime on the road. This year’s Travelling Pantomime will be visiting every neighbourhood in York (all 21 wards) during December and January. It will be visiting a variety of Covid-secure halls, clubs and sports centres. Details on the exact venues are still to be released.
And what’s the show, we hear you ask? Well, there are three – Dick Whittington, Jack and the Beanstalk and Aladdin – and the audience can choose which show they see on the night. Whichever show they pick, audience can expect music, magic and nonsense and will feature local actors including ever-popular York entertainer, Josh Benson.
