Christmas isn’t Christmas if you haven’t watched two full-grown adults trying to cross a stage dressed as a horse or – in the case of York Theatre Royal – had to dodge a Wagon Wheel that’s hurtling towards your head at full speed. Yep, it’s panto season and we’re very excited. This year there are three pantos to choose from:
The original and, dare we say, best panto that York has to offer is the York Theatre Royal’s starring local legend Berwick Kaler (read our interview with him here). Lots of Yorkies have been going all their lives and can’t imagine Christmas without it. This year it’s Aladdin, but it’s fairly irrelevant as they never stick to the story for long.
For a touch of celebrity with your pantomime, head to York’s Grand Opera House. This year sees Emmerdale star Adele Silva as the Wicked Queen, with Hollyoaks’ Marcus Patrick as the Huntsman and Any Dream Will Do star Rob McVeigh as the Prince.
If you think your little vikings might be a bit too young to appreciate the fine art of the pantomime, there’s also Cinderella at York Theatre Royal’s De Grey Rooms. Read more about it here.
