Cocktail anyone?! Relax while your children play at YO1 Beach Club

YO1 Beach Club

If you’ve still not made it to the beach this summer, don’t worry – York’s own beach awaits and it’s just got even more appealing. YO1 Beach Club – a new seaside zone in Tower Gardens – has been a hit with families since it opened at the start of the summer. Now it’s just got better as they’ve just announced that they can serve alcoholic drinks at the weekend. So if you fancy a cocktail while your kids play in the sand, you know where to go (and you don’t need a passport!). We went along to try it for ourselves and had a lovely afternoon sitting in the sun with a drink or two: a unicorn milkshake and slush for the girls and a very welcome glass of rose for me (after a week of self-isolating our eldest, I needed it!). It was lovely to be able to enjoy a drink with the kids but without having to go to a pub or venture into York city centre on a Saturday afternoon, which can be a bit ‘lively’.

There’s plenty of sand to play in, a boat to clamber on, indoor and outdoor seating (so it’s not just a place to go if the sun shines) and an upbeat soundtrack. There’s a short menu of child-pleasing food, with pizza, burgers and other barbecue options on offer as well as ice cream. The vegan burger was great, but it was the skin-on chips with just the right amount of salt that we nearly fought over.

This was our third or fourth trip to YO1 Beach Club and I doubt it’ll be our last of the summer. Our kids keep asking to go again because they feel relaxed and love the atmosphere (and the novelty drinks of course), and I like it too. The staff are friendly, it’s genuinely welcoming for children and it’s in one of the nicest locations in York. We’ve no idea whether it will be back next year yet, so catch it while you can. Pina colada anyone?!
