The wonderful Ryedale Book Festival is back for 2018 with a brilliant programme for children, and there’s a dragon theme to proceedings, with none other than Cressida Cowell – celebrated author of the How to Train Your Dragon – headlining with a family-friendly reading and film screening (Friday 21st September). On Saturday 22nd September there’s a packed programme of events, with illustration workshops, ceramic painting/storytelling sessions and much more. Some events need pre-booking, so do check the website early for details. There are many highlights and we’ve picked out some of our favourites below.
12.00 – 1.00: Wizard School with Elys Dolan: A special Wizard Training Academy where you can make your own potions, create your own trusty sidekick and design your own spells.
1.30 – 2.30: Dragon Drawing with Emily Gravett: Draw your own dragon in this illustration workshop with an award-winning illustrator.
3.00 – 4.00: Nick Toczek’s Dragon Show: Dragon-themed magic tricks, stories, puppets and some of the best dragon poems you will have ever heard.
4.30 – 5.30: The Huntress Trilogy by Sarah Driver: Join the creator of this stunning fantasy adventure for its epic and thrilling conclusion.
6.00 – 6.45: A Bedtime Story with Emily Gravett: Grab a teddy, pull on your PJs and head out for a charming bedtime story.
10.00 – 6.30: Tell me a Dragon: An exhibition of entries to the kid’s dragon-themed writing and drawing competition.
11.00 and 1.00: Sir Scaly Pants and the Dragon Knight: Story and Ceramics: Listen to the story and paint a ceramic dragon inspired by the book.
10.00 – 1.00: Zog – Story and biscuit decorating: Enjoy listening to this funny story from the creators of The Gruffalo and then decorate your own Zog biscuit to gobble-up or take-away.
10.00 – 2.00: Dragon Dot-to-Dot: Come and meet local writer Jean Illingworth and her illustrator son Jamie and hear about the adventures of Danny Dragon and his little friend Susie.

The competition closes on Friday 14th September 2018 and one winner will be notified at random. The prize is three tickets (2 children and 1 adult) to the Cressida Cowell reading and movie night, and no alternative prize will be offered. Good luck!
