Wheely good: York Festival of Cycling

Wheely good: York Festival of Cycling York for KidsAs a family we’ve got a love-hate relationship with cycling. Mr Viking has whipped around triathlons on a lightweight bike without a second thought, while Mrs Viking went head-over-handlebars on the way to school a couple of decades ago and has never quite got over it. The little vikings love all things two wheeled, of course, but haven’t quite worked out what they need to do. So it’s fair to say we’re a mixed ability bunch when it comes to bikes: enthusiastic but on the whole pretty rubbish.
This weekend it’s York’s fourth Festival of Cycling, which is perfect for cyclists of all ages and abilities (and non-cyclists too). We’ll be there. As well as a selection of bikes to try out, there will be a cycle stunt show, an airbag for BMXers, Minster FM broadcasting on Saturday morning, advice on cycling around buses, bouncy castles, refreshments and much more.
We’ve also signed up for the Sky Ride, which will be taking over York for a day of traffic-free bike riding for the whole family on Saturday. The route will be open from 10.30am to 4pm and there will be free, fun activities at the two activation areas (the York Eye and Rowntree Park). Wish us luck – we may need it!
York Festival of Cycling – Rowntree Park – Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th September 2013 – 10am to 5pm
Sky Ride – Saturday 14th September – 10.30am – 4pm – Free – To register visit www.goskyride.com/yorkskyride
