Here’s a selection of what’s on for families in York and beyond the walls over the next few days.

Charcoal Physical Theatre – Free Creative Workshop – Clementhorpe Community Hall – 4pm – 5pm – Free
An hour of ridiculously messy art and extraordinarily silly physical theatre activities, for big and small. And totally free – bargain!

Meet Tracey Corderoy – Waterstones, High Ousegate – 12 noon – Free

Meet the fantastic Tracey Corderoy, author of many popular children’s titles. She will be doing crafts based around her new book, The Very Messy Mermaid.

Saturday 10th August

What's On This Week York for KidsAxel Scheffler Book Signing – Nunnington Hall – 1pm – 4pm – Normal admission charges

Oh look! Oh no! It’s a Gruffalo! Axel Scheffler, the world-famous children’s book illustrator – and the man who brought the Gruffalo to life – will be signing books at Nunnington Hall. A variety of merchandise and books will be on sale. Nunnington is hosting an exhibition of illustrations from Axel Scheffler’s career until 1 September 2013.

Saturday 10th August

Little Diggers – DIG – £3 per child, one accompanying adult is free – 9.30am for an hour

The Little Diggers group is a Saturday morning session for 2-5 year olds at DIG. An enthusiastic guide takes the little diggers on an archaeological adventure with a different theme each week. It’s great fun and fantastic value (£3 per child at the time of writing). This week’s theme is Romans. Booking is essential: call 01904 615 505.

What's On This Week York for KidsSweetie funday – King’s Square, York – 11am -3pm – Free

York’s Chocolate Story is taking sweets to the streets this Saturday as part of their quest to discover the public’s favourite sweets. They’re asking people to nominate their favourite sweet and will be encouraging people to back their favourite sweet brand and learn more about York’s confectionary heritage. Children will be able to create their own masks, try some York sweets and become part of a famous Rowntree Cocoa advert. There will even be a chance to enter a ‘design your own chocolate sundae’ competition, with the winner’s sundae being launched in York’s CHOCOLATE Story as a Sundae Special.

Meet Gillian McClure – Waterstones, High Ousegate – 12noon – free

Meet children’s author and illustrator Gillian McClure and see some of her original artwork.

Saturday 10th August

Playday and street party – 1pm – 6pm – Door 84 Youth Centre, Lowther Street, The Groves and along Brownlow Street – Free

Playday is part of a national campaign to highlight how important playing is to children’s lives, so you can expect loads of free games and activities. There will be arts, crafts, sport, drama and theatre for the whole family to enjoy.

Wednesday 14 August

Llama Rock Walks  – Brimham Rocks – 10am – 4pm – £3.50 per person

Meet the Nidderdale Llama Team, pet and stroke a llama and take it for a walk! Children must be accompanied by an adult. Booking essential, tel: 01423 711052 or 07743 690770.

The Legend of King Arthur – York Theatre Royal – Until 31 August – Prices vary

What's On This Week York for KidsYork Theatre Royal has been transformed into Camelot for the summer in honour of their spectacular summer show. There are also free activities going on in the building, like jousting to hit a target, stocks with sponges, games and stories. As well as booking tickets for the show itself, you can try one of the workshops below.

Heraldry Workshop – Create your very own coat of arms!  Come to Arthur’s armoury and discover the secrets behind the symbols.  Find out about the pictures that illustrate your family name (or invent your own) and make a shield to take away with you at the end. Suitable for all the family. Cost £4. Takes place from Tuesdays to Saturdays, from 11:30am – 1:30pm and 5:30pm – 6:30pm. Drop in any time.

Knight School Workshop – Come and test your skills, wits and agility at knight school.  Complete King Arthur’s challenges to earn a place at his round table. Suitable for 7-11 year olds. Takes place from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 12 noon – 1pm each day. Cost £5.Contact the box office to book (01904 623 568).

Summer Speed Activities – National Railway Museum – Free

The National Railway Museum has gone to town with family-friendly activities this summer, and entry is free as always. Watch a Punch and Judy show, make your own speed machine and race it down the custom built track or follow the family speed trail throughout the museum. That’s on top of all the usual child-pleasers, like the playground and trains of course.

Every Monday and Tuesday until 27th August

Family Artrageous Workshops – Beningbrough Hall – normal admission charges and occasional additional small fee

From 1pm to 3pm every Monday and Tuesday throughout the holidays, join one of the popular art workshops to make, stick and build your own masterpiece. That’s if you can drag yourself away from the adventure playground.
