Welcome to Little Vikings, the new go-to website for families living in and visiting York. We thought we should introduce ourselves and tell you a little bit about why we decided to set up this site and how you can get the most out of it.
We’re a family living just outside the city walls: two little vikings and their slightly frazzled parents. Originally from York, we recently returned after a few years living in London. A decade of bad tea, London transport woes and jibes about our northern roots was enough; our friends kept telling us how much they were enjoying bringing up their little ones in York so we decided to see what the fuss was all about.
It turns out they were right: York’s fantastic for families, now more than ever. There’s so much going on, it’s hard to know where to start. We found it tricky to know where to go and what to do with our little vikings, especially when we first moved back. We thought it would be really helpful to have a website that focused on the very best of family-friendly York, from the year-round attractions to parks, cafes, restaurants, cinemas, swimming pools, farm shops and more, as well as a guide to what’s coming up. Such a thing didn’t seem to exist, so we decided to do it ourselves.
A few months and several hundred cups of tea and late nights later, here we are. We’ll be adding lots more content as time goes by, but we hope you like what we’ve done for starters. As well as essential information on what to do in the city for families, we’ve also added a section on some of our favourite day trips from York. There are ideas for what to do if it rains and a selection of things to do for free. Don’t miss our ‘useful info’ section either, for tips on where to change a nappy and where to get a baby’s passport photo taken. We’re keen to give your little vikings a voice on Little Vikings, too. See our Little Viking Voices for more information, and do get in touch if you’ve got a little viking who’d like to write something for us.
We’d love to hear about your favourite places to go and things to do with your little vikings, as well as any forthcoming events for families that you think we should cover. Also, if you try somewhere that we’ve recommended and don’t have a great experience, please let us know so we can reconsider whether it should stay on the site. The best way to contact us is by email. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy our website and find it useful. And happy Yorkshire Day!
