Things to do in York with kids this week (12th May)

There are some fun things coming up in York this week for kids, including a very special night at the Yorkshire Museum on Thursday with a chance to meet world-famous artist Grayson Perry and his teddy bear Alan Measles (and enjoy some fun family-friendly activities). At the weekend it’s the Steiner School Spring Fair and there’s a Spring Nature Walk at St Nick’s Fields too.

The Starbucks at Monks Cross is holding informal get-togethers on Monday mornings from 9.30am for mums (and dads) of small children. The first thirty coffees are free!

Learn new songs, play percussion instruments and encourage your child to develop both listening and communication skills in a fun and safe environment. For children aged 1 to 4 years old.

Meet the Museum Bears with Grayson Perry – Yorkshire Museum – 5.30pm to 9pm – Free (no need to book)

The Museums at Night event at the Yorkshire Museum, York, will include family friendly activities based around the Trust’s bear themed collections and the chance to meet Grayson as he plays “hide and seek” with visitors. The event will start at 5.30pm when Grayson officially opens the museum for the evening. Other activities include making clay bears, making costumes and dresses for your bear, listening to bear themed tales in the storytelling area, learning about woolly bear moths, face painting and a catch a salmon game.
Visitors can also bring sandwiches and their bear for a teddy bears’ picnic on the lawn.

This new venture from York Cocoa House and Hoglets, a York-based theatre company for children, combines chocolatey treats and a chance to relax for parents and a storytelling workshop for the little ones. Delicious.

Floral arrangements will fill the house with bursts of colour and fragrance, and the floral theme continues outside too: early summer blooms in the Walled Garden and rhododendrons in Ray Wood give plenty of opportunities to explore and admire beautiful displays in the grounds too. There’ll be a plant fair, demonstrations, promotions and expert advice.

Children’s book reading – Keregan Room, York Theatre Royal – 10.30am – Free

A fantastic reading of ‘A Cat and Mouse Story’ by Jacinta Elliott. It will include projection of pictures from the book. It should appeal to children aged from 3to 9/10ish. After the reading there will be a book signing and a costume-making activity using paper cut-outs of some of the characters.

The Little Diggers group is a Saturday morning session for 2-5 year olds at DIG. An enthusiastic guide takes the little diggers on an archaeological adventure with a different theme each week. It’s great fun and fantastic value. Booking is essential: call 01904 615 505.

Get creative at the museum and produce a graphic print to take home and frame. Inspired by pieces of vintage wallpaper, you’ll be guided by an artist to use lino printing techniques and create a funky piece of art. No experience necessary.

Put the Spring in your step on an easy walk through St Nicks nature reserve with knowledgeable wildwatchers. You will be looking for spring and early summer wildlife, especially our feathered friends. The walk is suitable for all ages.
