The Bloodaxe Reading Challenge is back in 2019 for little bookworms

The clocks have gone back and it feels like hibernation time, and what better way to make like a squirrel and cosy up with the kids and a book or two (nuts optional). One great way to inspire them to keep reading during the winter months is by signing up to the annual Bloodaxe Challenge. This partnership between The JORVIK Group and Explore York Libraries challenges children to read four books with a link to history, whether through heroes, mythical animals, stone age people or anything else with a connection to times gone by.

How to sign up

Visit your local Explore York library to receive a bookmark. The children will then collect stickers for each book they read. Once they complete the challenge, they’ll get a certificate and voucher for free entry to the JORVIK Viking Centre. They’ll also be entered into a draw to meet author Hilary Robinson who’ll be talking about her book, Jasper Viking Dog, during February half term 2020 as part of the JORVIK Viking Festival. For more details, visit the Explore York website.
