Books aren’t the only reason that families gravitate towards York Explore Library. As well as a very well-stocked children’s section, and rare baby-changing facilities, there’s also a lovely cafe. There’s a lovely welcoming atmosphere and a tasty range of cakes, drinks and light meals. Eat in or grab something to eat at the Museum Gardens, just around the corner. There are also fanily-friendly cafes at Acomb Explore, Homestead Park (pop-up), Hungate Reading Cafe, Rowntree Park Reading Cafe and The Centre@Burnholme.

Beningbrough

Yorkies often describe Beningbrough as an extension of their own back garden, and it’s easy to see why local families return time and again. This National Trust 18th century house and its pretty grounds have plenty to offer for a day out with kids in tow. As well as the house itself (when open), there are beautiful gardens with plenty of space to run about, and a great adventure playground and wilderness play area too. There are two cafes and plenty of space for a picnic. Holiday activities are excellent so keep your eye out, and you can even stay there as they have a self-catering apartment.

Good to know – If you fancy a walk around the grounds, pick up a map at reception. There are a few alternatives depending on how energetic you’re feeling. Free entry to National Trust members.

Burnby Hall Gardens

Burnby Hall Gardens is a great destination with kids. Hidden away in the lovely market town of Pocklington, there’s plenty to enjoy at this very pretty place. As well as the gorgeous trees, flowers, rockery and secret gardens, there are two lakes which groan with fish and water lilies. There’s a playground, but the highlight is feeding the wonderful fish (buy a pot of fish food on your way in) and running around on the grass.

Keep an eye out for special events, from an annual Tulip Festival, Sunday brass band concerts and children’s events held throughout the year. These include outdoor theatre, children’s crafts and trails.

The Yorkshire Museum

Affectionately known as ‘the dinosaur museum’ by local pre-schoolers, the Yorkshire Museum is a very popular destination for families.

In the heart of the city is the Yorkshire Museum, a museum that houses a variety of important archaeological, biological and geological collections among other exhibits. The current Jurassic Yorkshire exhibition, opened by Sir David Attenborough no less, is always a hit, with interactive activities and even the chance to feed a dinosaur thanks to the magic of virtual reality. It’s not the biggest museum but it’s a very good size for younger children. Older children with a fascination for all things prehistoric will learn loads through the interactive and hands-on displays.

Good to know – You can download trails for children to follow around the museum and gardens from the Museum’s website. It’s in the Museum Gardens, so why not combine with a picnic, a stroll by the river or a trip to Explore York library or York Art Gallery?

The National Railway Museum is one of York’s top attractions, and come rain or shine, it’s one of the best things to do in York with kids. Even better, entry to the museum is free!
