The post Dalby Forest first appeared on Little Vikings - York for Kids.]]> Dalby Forest is one of Yorkshire’s most stunning spots. Home to over 8,500 acres of breathtaking views, endless walking, running and cycling trails and Gruffalo adventures, Dalby offers something for everyone!

A visit to Dalby will uncover many magical things such as The Gruffalo orienteering course, Superworm trail, some of the very best mountain biking trails and endless stunning views. Keep your eyes peeled along the way for the unique sculptures dotted throughout the forest, get the adrenaline pumping at Dalby Activity Centre or test your nerve and swing amongst the trees on the Go Ape courses.

Dalby Forest is home to an abundance of internationally important wildlife species and is also a designated Dark Sky Discovery Site, where you can experience the magic of seeing the Milky Way with the naked eye.

In under an hour from York, find yourself embarking on a bike or walking trail (all abilities; clearly marked) or enjoying an amazing adventure playground that’s suitable for all ages. The themed kids’ trails are great fun and reduce the moaning that a long walk usually brings.

Good to know – You only pay for parking, making this a brilliant value day out. Don’t miss the adventure playgrounds, but do venture beyond them as there are lots of things to do in the forest itself. Keep an eye out for special events throughout the year.

There’s plenty of space to run about, lots of beautiful ruins, a view of the river and plenty of wildlife (the squirrels are everywhere!). There’s usually somewhere to grab a coffee, and it’s a stone’s throw from lots of cafes and restaurants if you fancy picking up something to go. The Museum Gardens are also home to The Yorkshire Museum, another very popular York museum (known as ‘the dinosaur museum’ by local children). Close to the Explore York Library, York Theatre Royal and York Art Gallery, it’s perfectly placed for families.

This pretty fourteen-acre park in the Clifton area of York has lots to enjoy, from formal gardens to two play areas, wildflower meadow, pond, rock garden and plenty of open spaces to kick a ball. During the summer there’s a pop-up cafe, and there are loos too (very important!). There are picnic benches and a small car park, although you may need to park on the road during busy periods. Check their Facebook page for the current opening hours as they’re subject to change.

Those who are lucky enough to live in nearby villages use this Yorkshire Wildlife Trust place as their second garden, and it’s not hard to see why. This little woodland punches above its weight, with a stunning collection of trees and wildlife that are a pleasure to wander through at any time of year. It’s a nature spotter’s paradise, too, so pack binoculars or a bird-spotting book and see what you can find. If you’re looking for a short but beautiful walk just outside York, Moorlands is a great option.

The post Rowntree Park first appeared on Little Vikings - York for Kids.]]> With two play areas, ornamental lake, oodles of ducks and geese, a skate park, six tennis courts, a basketball court and a reading cafe complete with little library, it’s no wonder that Rowntree Park is so popular with York’s families.

It’s open all year round, aside from Christmas Day, and is generally accessible from 8 am until dusk (but check for the most recent opening hours). The Friends and Young Friends of Rowntree Park are fantastic volunteer-led organisations that run great activities for families throughout the year, so keep your eye out.

Take a scooter, ball or your tennis kit (book online first) or just put the baby in the buggy and give them their first swing! Pack a picnic if you like, just avoid the grass that the geese have taken a shine to (we’ll say no more). There are squirrels galore and plenty of interesting plants and trees to spot. Its riverside location is fantastic but does mean that the park occasionally floods. It’s a short walk from here into York city centre. Find out what’s on at Rowntree Park by following them on Facebook.

For another green park near York city centre, York Museum Gardens is also an excellent place for children to explore.
