If you’re looking for a York eating experience like no other, it has to be Bettys. A jewel in the city’s crown, Bettys is the ultimate destination for afternoon tea in York, but it’s also a lovely place for breakfast, lunch and dinner (sometimes with a soundtrack of live piano music!). Despite being York’s most luxurious tearoom, it’s actually very family-friendly, with a children’s menu, space to store your buggy, colouring-in activities and lovely staff who’ll make sure that everyone’s happy. York Explore Library

Books aren’t the only reason that families gravitate towards York Explore Library. As well as a very well-stocked children’s section, and rare baby-changing facilities, there’s also a lovely cafe. There’s a lovely welcoming atmosphere and a tasty range of cakes, drinks and light meals. Eat in or grab something to eat at the Museum Gardens, just around the corner. There are also fanily-friendly cafes at Acomb Explore, Homestead Park (pop-up), Hungate Reading Cafe, Rowntree Park Reading Cafe and The Centre@Burnholme.

While children will want to visit Dreamery Gardens to explore the maze, see the fairy houses or to do the magical fairy trail, adults may well be lured there by the Dreamery Kitchen. Much more than just a place to pick up your tickets, Dreamery Kitchen is a woodland sanctuary where you can enjoy delicious organic coffee, tasty cakes and even lunch. It’s a stylish and relaxing place to visit where children are very welcome. You don’t even need to buy tickets to the Trail to enjoy the delights of the Kitchen. Expect amazing eggs, epic waffles, fab pastries, homemade granola and great coffee in this lovely neighbourhood café on award-winning Bishy Road. There’s a focus on local produce, and you’ll find plenty of vegan and veggie options too. Friendly staff, a warm atmosphere and delicious, comforting food whatever time of day make this a popular choice, so expect to queue and maybe share a table at peak times. But it’s worth it.

Trinacria Sicilian Restaurant York

For traditional Sicilian food in York, look no further than Trinacria. Situated just outside the city on the ever-popular Bishopthorpe Road, Trinacria has become a local institution since it opened. It’s easy to see why: the food is fantastic, the ice creams are out of this world and the service is incredibly friendly. Locals flock here so it can be hard to get a table at peak times, but if you decide to stay and queue, it’ll be worth the wait. There’s no kids’ menu but they’ll happily do small portions of adult meals. It’s less than five minutes from here to Rowntree Park and the river, so it’s a useful place to know.

The Balloon Tree

The Balloon Tree is an award-winning farm shop and restaurant that warmly welcomes families. As well as having a well-stocked shop packed with freshly picked treats, there’s a café that serves homecooked breakfasts and lunches as well as a tempting array of cakes. Bag a table outside next to the play area for maximum child-free time! Keep an eye on them while you enjoy a quiet hot drink (we can dream). Depending on the time of year, you can pick your own fruit and veg too. It’s a great place to meet friends with children.
