The Great Yorkshire Fringe 2017: The Best Shows For Kids

0

We’ve been huge supporters of the Great Yorkshire Fringe since its launch two years ago because fantastic family shows have been central to the festival from the start. This year is no different, with some cracking entertainment for families with children of all ages. Here’s our pick of the best. Tickets are on sale now, and we’d strongly recommend avoiding a last minute panic by smugly buying them now. For more info and to book, visit the Great Yorkshire Fringe website.

The Scarecrows’ Wedding

The Julia Donaldson shows are a mainstay of the Great Yorkshire Fringe’s offering for families (I still have a lump in my throat when I think back to Stickman) and this year it’s The Scarecrow’s Wedding.

Betty O’Barley and Harry O’Hay are excellent scarecrows (they scare a lot of crows). Harry loves Betty, and Betty loves Harry, so they decide to get married and Harry sets off to search for their wedding day essentials including a dress of feathers, a bunch of flowers and a necklace made from shells. However, when the farmer notices he is missing a scarecrow, he replaces Harry with the devilishly smooth but dangerous Reginald Rake.  Dashing, daring and ever so cool, can Reginald persuade Betty that he is the scarecrow for her? Will Harry make it back in the nick of time before Reginald ruins their special day?

Running time: 1 hour

Morgan & West: More Magic for Kids!

We took our 7 year old to see time-travelling magicians Morgan and West last year, and he still talks about it now. They’re back again, with a show full of crazy capers for all ages. They have daytime shows and an evening one that’s suitable for children aged 9+.

Running time: 1 hour

Suitable for: 5+

Dates: 21st & 22nd July 2017

The Giants’ Loo Roll

Who wants to see the biggest loo roll ever? Go on, you know you do! Watch out for frightened sheep, lots of excited children and a ridiculous amount of toilet paper in this rip-roaring musical direct from the West End by TaleGate Theatre Productions.

Running time: 50 mins

Suitable for: 3+

Dates: 5th & 6th August

Baby Loves Disco

Go clubbing with your kids at daytime disco, Baby Loves Disco. There’s a DJ, facepainting, crafts, balloons, dressing up and a licensed bar for parents. We went last year and had a grand old time. Read our review here.

Running time: 1 hour 45 mins

Suitable for: 0 – 7 years

Date: 23rd July 2017

Amazing Bubble Man

Everyone loves bubbles, so it’s no wonder that the Amazing Bubble Man is always a huge hit with the Great Yorkshire Fringe families. Keep your eyes peeled for square bubbles, foggy bubbles, giant bubbles and people inside bubbles…

The Kagools – Tutti

Multi award-winning physical comedy act, The Kagools, return to Great Yorkshire Fringe with ‘Tutti’, a brand new show for 2017. It’s spontaneous, anarchic fun for everyone.

Suitable for: 4+

Date: 22nd July 2017

West End Magic

More magic, this time courtesy of of Oliver tabor, award-winning magician and illusionist. We saw the show last year and left open-mouthed. Our seven year old couldn’t believe his eyes and is desperate to go again this year. Can’t recommend it more highly than that.

Running time: 1 hour

Suitable for: 5+

Dates: 28th to 30th July 2017
