If there’s one thing that might persuade the kids to leave the play area at Rowntree Park, it’s the promise of a drink or something to eat at the Reading Room and Cafe. What’s not to love? There’s a huge selection of children’s books to browse (and borrow, if you have a YorkCard), delicious coffee, cakes and lunches and a view across the park. Very friendly service and a warm atmosphere make this a very popular place; it’s not huge so there can be fierce competition for tables at weekends and mealtimes.
Best avoided in the middle of the week – the new ‘Wordless Wednesday’ concept means that peace and quiet are the order of the day, with chatty children (and their parents) likely to feel out of place. Opening hours change throughout the year, so best to check before promising the kids a slice of cake.
Best for – a much needed pick-me-up after a stint at the playground.
