Review: Santa’s Sweet Story at York’s Chocolate Story

Christmas and chocolate go hand-in-hand, so where better to meet Father Christmas than at York’s favourite chocolate attraction – as voted by Little Vikings readers year after year – York’s Chocolate Story? We joined a gaggle of excited Little Vikings winners on a prize tour to check out one of York’s newest Santa experiences.
This festive visit to York’s Chocolate Story takes the form of a tour with a twist. Instead of being taken on a journey through the history of chocolate and York’s chocolate heritage – which is what visitors usually experience at the attraction – Santa’s Sweet Story is a Christmas adventure led by an elf called Tinsel. Tinsel is an enthusiastic and friendly elf who was brilliant with the children, as you’d hope Santa’s helpers would be. After a quick introduction, she led us into Santa’s winter wonderland where we got to meet the man himself. With lots of children eager to meet him, it was great not to have to queue or wait for a long time before meeting him. In our experience, the shorter the build-up, the lower the chance of a meltdown! When little ones are in a slightly festive frenzy, every little helps.
The children then had the chance to have a photo with Father Christmas, before setting off on a mission to try to find some chocolate that Tinsel had lost. This was one of a couple of activities for everyone to get involved in; the other was spotting various presents that were dotted around the attraction. Although all the children enjoyed these activities, it was Father Christmas and Tinsel who were the real hits.
Many Santa experiences are fairly short, so it felt like a real treat that Father Christmas was on the tour with us for almost the entire time. He explained how chocolate is made, helped us to make reindeer food that we could take home and got involved in the chocolate lolly making (the kids all made a chocolate snowman), as well as being part of the chocolate-making demonstration at the end. Santa was brilliant with the children, posing for endless photos and really engaging with everyone. Both he and Tinsel were tirelessly enthusiastic and made sure everyone was included and having a nice time.
With our chocolate snowman lollies made and freshly made chocolates eaten, each child was then lucky enough to be given an extra gift to take home. It was a nice touch that the older children had a different gift – our eldest was very pleased with the chocolate kit, while the younger two were delighted with their reindeer soft toys. We got to take home the printed photo with Santa in a festive wallet, too, as a lovely reminder of our time. We very much enjoyed Santa’s Sweet Adventure, and the feedback from our competition winners was very good too. As Santa experiences go, this one is a Christmas cracker.

Santa’s Sweet Adventure runs at York’s Chocolate Story until 24th December. Children £9.95 (under 3 £5), adult £5.95; family of four £29.95. Book your tickets online

Thank you to York’s Chocolate Story, and to Santa, for having us. As always, our reviews are independent and honest, and we will only ever recommend something that we have enjoyed
