This week isn’t just any old week – it’s British Pie Week! And in honour of this annual celebration of one of the nation’s favourite dishes, we were invited along to No.88 Walmgate to sample some of the pies they’ll be offering up to hungry customers over the next few days.
Our two-year-old lady-who-lunches was more than happy to accept their kind offer and give the Little Vikings verdict to families across the city. As we’ve visited No88 before to check out their family-friendly credentials and children’s menu – not to mention the awe-inspiring and sugar-rush-inducing ice cream/milkshake monster known as the Freakshake – we already knew that they tick the family-friendly box. The staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating: charming with the kids, happy to chat but equally quick to realise when they’ve got a shy one on their hands.
Rather than choosing something from the kids’ menu, our littlest decided – at the suggestion of our helpful waiter – that she’d like a pie too. When it arrived, she couldn’t believe her eyes. These are pies at their best: piping hot, cooked to order and really, really tasty. Dig beneath the clouds of soft mashed potato and you’ll find generous chunky, locally sourced ingredients in a well seasoned, creamy sauce. The two-year-old couldn’t decide if she preferred my aubergine and sundried tomato pie or her salmon version, so she got stuck into both. In fact we liked them so much that I’d love the recipes so I could have a go at making them at home. She wasn’t overly interested in the lovely green veg and extra potato that came with them, which just meant more for me.
No88 is offering a free ale with every pie purchased during British Pie Week, so in the interests of research I tried a blond ale from York craft brewery, The Hop Studio. As a wine girl, this was uncharted territory, especially for a Thursday lunchtime with a toddler in tow. It was very refreshing, went really well with the pie and I’d happily order it again. The toddler was, as always, delighted with her apple juice. If you’re planning on eating out this week – with kids or without – we’d heartily recommend escaping the rain and warming up at No88 with one of their delicious pies. The toddler’s verdict? ‘More’.
