Review: Four reasons to visit Goose, Harrogate

We love Instagram for sharing pictures of great things about York, and the stuff we get up to with our own family, but it’s been brilliant for discovering new places too. Last weekend we visited Goose in Harrogate, somewhere that had come to our attention through their lovely Instagram pics. We loved what we saw, and here are four reasons to visit.

It’s a great place for parents and children alike

Goose describes itself as a family clubhouse. We weren’t sure what to expect, but what we found was that rare thing: a place that parents and children will love equally. It’s a stylish space that incorporates places to play, lounge, eat, create, read and chat. It’s how lots of us would love our homes to be, if only real life didn’t get in the way. If you’ve ever dreamt of being able to actually enjoy eating out with young children, this is probably your best chance. If they get bored with eating, they can potter off and find something to do.

There’s lots for kids to do

Borrow a jigsaw or game, read a book, draw on the blackboard, play with the magnetic shapes, ride on the toys…There’s no shortage of things to do. Standard entry (£4 per child when we visited; adults free) gets you access to everything except the supervised crafting area (£4.50 each). There’s more for the little ones, but our seven year-old loved playing endless board games and having a go at table football. The Lego den was his idea of heaven. This isn’t soft play, and there’s not a slide in sight: it’s just a great place to hang out and chill out with your kids. It’s a great place to meet friends or family with children, too. You might even get the chance to have an uninterrupted conversation (no promises).

The food’s fantastic

Brunch is Goose’s thing, with adult and children’s menus groaning with eggs, crepes and lots of other very tempting treats. We enjoyed piles of scrambled eggs with roasted tomatoes, French crepes, and the kids had dippy eggs, porridge and scrambled eggs. All were polished off, with just enough space for a cookie (who’d have thought?!). The selection of cakes is mouth-watering, but there’s even free fruit on offer if you’re feeling virtuous.

There’s lots of lovely detail

From free fruit to fantastic baby-changing stacked with nappies, Goose is the epitome of a modern family-friendly venture. There’s a great soundtrack, friendly staff and it’s squeaky clean too. All we need to do now is persuade them to open in York…
