Review: Date night dinner at Filmore and Union

So how’s Dry January working out for you? And have you managed to resist dipping into the leftover Christmas chocolates yet? Yep, it’s that time of year again when, fuelled by guilt at having consumed our bodyweight in mulled wine and mince pies, everyone jumps on the clean-eating (and drinking) bandwagon.
While it’s probably a good thing to kick the habit of getting through to lunchtime on advent calendar calories alone, clean eating (ie. eating fresh, unprocessed foods) might seem an unexciting alternative. The good folk from the small independent Yorkshire chain Filmore and Union spotted this very problem and have built their restaurants around providing really tasty food that just happens to be good for you.
I often drop into the High Petergate branch for a takeaway coffee but had never considered it for dinner until our plans for an anniversary night out fell through. We found ourselves in the middle of York on a rowdy Saturday night without a reservation. As luck would have it, a table had just become free at Filmore and Union so we found ourselves sitting down to a gluten-free, dairy-free feast in the middle of December. We eat pretty healthily at home, so going out for dinner is usually a chance to treat ourselves. We wondered if such a healthy meal would hit the spot, but we needn’t have worried.
The festive fixed price menu offered plenty of tempting options for meat-eaters and veggies alike; we started with a delicious roast carrot soup and maple and sesame turkey skewers, followed by a Moroccan lamb dish and a vegan curry with chestnuts, prunes and cashews. It was all really tasty, beautifully presented, full of flavour and very satisfying. That, coupled with the fact that the dining room itself has a lovely intimate atmosphere and the staff were really friendly, made it feel like a special evening. The fact it was good for us was just a bonus. So if you’re thinking of postponing your next night out because it’ll mess up your diet, think again. Filmore and Union has it covered.
