Review: Breakfast at Brew & Brownie

Monday: toast and cereal. Tuesday: toast and cereal. Wednesday: toast and cereal….By the weekend we’re pretty bored of bleary-eyed butter spreading and desperate to let someone else take over the breakfast service. We decided to give our toaster a well-earned morning off and headed into town to let the lovely folk at Brew & Brownie do the breakfast honours instead.
What’s on the menu? If you have trouble making decisions first thing in the morning, you might want to allow extra time to peruse the menu. From porridge with a choice of toppings to a doorstop bacon sandwich with tomato chutney, there’s something for everyone, carnivore/veggie, health-conscious/hungover, little/large. Our little ones didn’t hesitate – they wanted pancakes. Lots of them, with none of that funny fruit stuff, thank you very much.
They were delighted with their steaming mini stacks of fresh American pancakes with syrup and all three of them (including the 9 month old) gobbled their way though them until their plates were clean. Mr Viking demolished pancakes with streaky bacon and blueberries and I flew the flag for slightly healthier eating with a delicious dish of granola. A special mention for the coffee, too, which is some of the best we’ve had in York (and as tired parents of three small kids, we’ve had a lot).
What’s it like for families? With its sophisticated but relaxed atmosphere, Brew & Brownie is a really nice place to hang out. While families are very welcome, don’t expect crayons or boxes of toys. And although there’s a highchair, there’s no dedicated baby changing. Don’t let that put you off though: this is a great place to come with your kids and attempt to have a chat with them over something really tasty, or to bring your baby and meet friends. It’s handily situated on Museum Street, so you can combine it with a trip to the library or Museum Gardens for extra child-pleasing points.
What’s the verdict? If there’s a better way to start the day than a stack of pancakes and a fantastic coffee, we’d like to know. The kids absolutely loved it and so did we; this is definitely one of York’s special places to eat and drink. We might just give the toaster another day off again very soon.
