October half term in York: The Big Draw at York Art Gallery

Mark Hearld Detail smallOctober half term is the perfect time to check out the newly renovated York Art Gallery because they’re putting on activities to celebrate this year’s Big Draw, the campaign to get people drawing. Drop-in art activities run from 24th to 30th October (11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm) and there’ll be an art heroes trail too (50p per trail including reward). A free drop-in family workshop, All that Glitters is Not Gold, will run on 31st October (11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm), with creative activities run by artist Jo Walton.
If you’re wondering whether the Art Gallery is really for kids, we’d say it is. We took our little vikings (aged 5, 3 and almost 1) a few days ago and they absolutely loved it. It really brought out their inner artist: the eldest did his own still life drawings, the 3 year old loved stroking the sculptures (look for the ‘Hands On’ sign) and playing with the tea set, and the baby loved looking at all the different images. There’s enough to keep them engaged in every space, and you can always promise them a drink and slice of tasty cake in the cafe (run by much-loved York independent, Cafe No 8) if they behave!
