Kids climbing the walls? You need some fresh Yorkshire air! That funny time between Christmas and New Year – that someone has rather annoyingly named Twixmas – calls for a bit of outdoor time to offset all that festive telly time, and Castle Howard is a good option. It’s closer than you think (well, the A64 is a lot easier at this time of year at any rate), and although the house is closed, the gardens and adventure playground are open daily for anyone wanting to stretch their legs or park up and discover the estate on a longer walk.
Forgotten your flask? Don’t panic! The coffee shop will be offering hot drinks and treats for those in need of refreshment at the start or the end of a Boxing Day walk and from 27th December you can enjoy breakfast and lunch options in the stable courtyard, too (admission free). Feeling extra energetic? There’s a whole host of downloadable walking and cycling routes on the Castle Howard website. Amble around the estate, and then go home, warm up and reward yourselves with a big slab of Christmas cake!
