I’ve occasionally heard the odd grumble about Mother’s Day being a made-up Hallmark holiday (generally from dads who’ve forgotten to buy a card). But I for one say YES PLEASE to the offer of breakfast in bed, a homemade card and, if I’m lucky, a nice family trip somewhere. If that sounds up your street too, here are some ideas for things to do in and around York this Mother’s Day.
Free entry for mums to York’s Chocolate Story
Lots of mums (and dads) rely on the restorative powers of chocolate to get them through the tricky days/weeks/decades of parenting. So where better to visit on Mother’s Day than York’s Chocolate Story? All mums are welcome to visit York’s Chocolate Story for free with a paying son or daughter where they’ll learn the history of York’s most iconic chocolate brands and create their own chocolate treats, before seeing how the experts do it.
Forgot to buy a gift? Don’t panic! The shop is packed with fab presents. including the amazing handmade chocolates (we’ve had them – they’re awesome). Even better, how about indulging in a Chocolate Afternoon Tea in the café?

Go out for Sunday lunch!
Going out for a lovely lunch is always a winner. If you fancy a traditional Sunday roast in York, we’ve tried, tested and would recommend The Rattle Owl and Hotel du Vin as having fab food and warmly welcoming children. For something different, Ambiente Tapas is always fantastic and, again, great with kids. If you want lunch with a really healthy vibe, mums eat brunch for free at Filmore and Union if you download their voucher. Just promise us you’ll get her a glass of wine too!
Pack a picnic and have a walk
PS. If you’re slightly dreading Mother’s Day because, like me, you’re missing your own mum (or for any other reason for that matter), I hope you can take some comfort in knowing you’re not the only one and in spending time with the friends and family around you.
