Family Weekend at the North York Moors Railway

Go behind the scenes at the North York Moors Railway for their first Family Weekend this weekend. On Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st May, you’ll see all the work that goes into keeping the wheels turning. See the steam crane at Grosmont, learn about the infrastructure and bridges at Goathland, and meet the archive team at Pickering. Here’s what’s going on at the various locations on the line.

Pickering Station

  • Learn what goes on in the Carriage & Wagon Depot & Model Railway Display

  • Archives Display in the Learning Centre – ‘Lighting at the Railway’

Levisham Station 

  • Junior Volunteer Talks & Demonstrations

Goathland Station

  • Learn about the importance of the bridges and have a go at making your own bridge (Saturday only 1100-1500)
  • Historic Station Tours (1200 & 1400)
  • Visit the cab of one of the heritage diesel locomotives

Grosmont Station

  • Motive Power Depot (MPD) Crane Demonstrations
  • Look through the Works, Boiler Shop and Wheel Drops
  • Saturday only – Grosmont Co-op will be commemorating its 150 anniversary year. This will be celebrated with a Victorian Fair in the afternoon. There will be music from the Goathland Plough Stots, Hawsker Village Band and The Hobos as well as traditional games and activities. Velocipede tin bath rides, swing boats and roundabouts and archery will take place as well as the chance to have your photograph taken in Victorian costume. There will be Victorian teas and cakes and craft stalls, display of mining artefacts, a real ale bar and Yorkshire Gin stall. The event will have an official opening for members and will be open to everyone from 1.30pm.
