There’s a new event coming to York this September, and it should be fun for families. Indie York and iTravel York have joined forces to create a treasure hunt that will encourage families to explore the city on foot, search for clues in the windows of York’s fabulous independent businesses and maybe even win a prize! As members of the Indie York committee ourselves, we’ve really enjoyed playing a small part in putting the trail together.
What to expect
An exciting, family-friendly treasure hunt is coming to the centre of York on 5th & 6th and 12th & 13th September 2020. Eagle-eyed walkers of all ages can spot clues in independent shops and other business windows. Participants will figure out what theme the clues indicate and have the chance to enter a prize draw for a £50 York Gift Card.

Indie York are providing a free map with walking routes that take in all 60 participating independent businesses. Pick up a copy from the businesses or from the Visit York Information Centre.
There are 7 different clusters of businesses taking part around the city with 7 themes to guess. The map will tell you where the clusters are. The clues in business windows are also colour coded, so participants will know if they are in the green cluster, red cluster and so on. The clusters of businesses or areas are often based around our ancient streets in York such as Goodramgate, Gillygate, Fossgate, Walmgate, Micklegate, Stonegate and the Shambles. Once you have completed a cluster, you can enter the prize draw for that area and win a possible £50 gift card to spend in a shop or business of your choice. Individual businesses might also provide a little bonus or a small piece of treasure whilst on the route.
Indie York Treasure Hunt in October
It’ll be October half term before we know it, and there’ll be another Indie York treasure hunt with a Medieval and Magical theme. Keep an eye out for more details!
